چکیده

Of the 20.6 million low birth weight (LBW) infants born every year, about 8 million are born in India1. Low birth weight is the most important risk factor for neonatal mortality, contributing to about three quarters of neonatal deaths in India2. In order to survive through infancy, LBW infants need additional care particularly with regard to breathing, temperature maintenance, feeding, hygiene and early recognition and treatment of infections. LBW infants are a heterogeneous group born too early, born too small, or both and the spectrum varies for developing and developed countries. In India, over two thirds of LBW infants are term.

Influence of maternal breast milk ingestion on acquisition of the intestinal microbiome in preterm infants

BACKGROUND The initial acquisition and early development of the intestinal microbiome during infancy are important to human health across the lifespan. Mode of birth, antibiotic administration, environment of care, and nutrition have all been shown to play a role in the assembly of the intestinal microbiome during early life. For preterm infants, who are disproportionately at risk of inflammato...

Formula milk versus donor breast milk for feeding preterm or low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND When sufficient maternal breast milk is not available, the alternative sources of enteral nutrition for preterm or low birth weight infants are donor breast milk or artificial formula milk. Feeding preterm or low birth weight infants with formula milk might increase nutrient input and growth rates. However, since feeding with formula milk may be associated with a higher incidence of ...

Session 4: Mineral metabolism and body composition iron status of breast-fed infants.

Fe deficiency is a common nutritional disorder during infancy, particularly in low-income countries. The Fe status of a breast-fed infant is strongly influenced by the body Fe content at birth, which is determined by factors that operate before birth (maternal Fe status before and during pregnancy; infant gestational age and birth weight) and at the time of delivery (the timing of umbilical cor...

Growth in VLBW infants fed predominantly fortified maternal and donor human milk diets: a retrospective cohort study

BACKGROUND To determine the effect of human milk, maternal and donor, on in-hospital growth of very low birthweight (VLBW) infants. We performed a retrospective cohort study comparing in-hospital growth in VLBW infants by proportion of human milk diet, including subgroup analysis by maternal or donor milk type. Primary outcome was change in weight z-score from birth to hospital discharge. MET...

Enteral nutrition of the very low birth weight (VLBW) infant.

INTRODUCTION Optimal nutrition is critical in the management of the very low birth weight (VLBW) infant. METHODS The type of feeding, initiation, route and schedule of feeding, and the rate of increase in feeding volume were reviewed. RESULTS Human milk from the preterm infant's mother is the feeding of choice. When full enteral feeding is established, supplementation of human milk with a m...
